“Here is a spritely scene of travelers outside a teahouse of the town of Totsuka. From Edo (Tokyo) to Totsuka at the time, was about one day’s journey. There is a man gingerly mounting off his horse. On the left of him, a female maidservant, finely dressed is greeting the visitors after their long voyage. There is a man on the right, standing next to the horse, is a porter, with his back facing us. Next to him is a woman who is carrying a large bundle, still balanced on her back. On the right side is an elderly man, nimbly balancing many bundles on his body while crossing the bridge. A milestone next to the bridge says, “For Kamakura, Turn Left.” The animated indigo streaks on the foreground indicate that nightfall is swiftly approaching.”
